Uzbekistan cancels prayers in mosques during Eid al-adha, as infection cases go up

As daily infection cases continue to surge all over the world, and more and more states are facing the new waves of pandemic, Uzbekistan, as well its neighbors across the region, have canceled collective prayers in mosques during the approaching Eid al-Adha holiday.

According to experts, COVID-19 is mainly transmitted through air-drops, with handshaking being among the main reasons for infection. Therefore, the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, has recommended performing Zuha prayer at home. Zuha prayer is mentioned in the sources under various names, more commonly known as “Ishraq prayer”, “Shuruq prayer”, “Awwabiyn prayer” and “Chashgoh prayer”.

The religious body has also banned Friday prayers as well. Other prayers are performed in open scenes of mosques, observing all the quarantine requirements, that is, wearing a mask and maintaining distance. Handshaking or hugging in mosques are strictly prohibited.
