June 8 marks World Oceans Day

As far as public health is concerned, the importance of oceans cannot be overestimated. Our lives are strongly connected with world aquatic world. Some may be surprised to read that organisms discovered at extreme depths are used to speed up the detection of COVID-19, and probably even more to learn that, it is the environment that could give a solution to humankind. This is one of the multiple reasons why we should celebrate World Oceans Day: to remind everyone of the major role oceans play in everyday life.

World Oceans Day takes place annually on the 8th of June. The concept was originally proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world's oceans. And the theme of UN World Oceans Day 2020 is “Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean.” Innovations that may act as impetus to introduce new methods, ideas, or products. The Organization is eagerly promoting  the global movement to call on world leaders to protect 30% of our blue planet by 2030. This critical need is called 30*30. By safeguarding at least 30% of our ocean, we can help ensure a healthy home for all!

Oceans are the lungs of our planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe. They occupy about 70% of the Earth’s surface. More than 2 million species of living organisms live in there. If oceans evaporated, the Earth would be covered with a layer of salt of 50 m. They are a major source of food and medicine and a critical part of the biosphere. Unfortunately, the human kind do not always use the natural resources of the oceans intelligently. Every minute, around 2 million plastic bags and 1 million plastic bottles are dumped into the vast domain of water. And at the moment, its biological resources are largely depleted. Says  Anvar Meliboev, the head of the UN information center in Uzbekistan

Corr.: The UN Secretary General, Antoniu Guterres, emphasized a vital role of world oceans and sea in regulating the global climate. - We depend on the ocean as a source of food and livelihood and use it for transportation and trade. Today, as a result of climate change, sea levels are rising, threatening people's lives and livelihoods in low-lying countries, coastal cities and communities around the world. In addition, the ongoing acidification of the oceans threatens marine biodiversity and critical food chains. Plastic pollution is everywhere.

In addressing on the occasion, he noted the importance of ocean awareness; calling on governments and all involved parties to commit themselves to the preservation and maintenance of a sustainable ocean through innovation and science.

In the end, it is a day for us to celebrate and appreciate the beauty, the wealth and the promise of the ocean.
