Defamation or insult in media may be decriminalized

The Public Fund for the Support and Development of National Mass Media has proposed that defamation and insult in the media be decriminalized. With the laws currently in place slander or insult through the media will result in criminal prosecution. The funds’ first aim is the remove the aggravating circumstance and allow the media to act as watchdogs and support social justice. 

Even if a member of the media is not sentenced to prison they face having to pay a steep fine. According to the fund, general circumstances will result in a fine of up to 44 million soms and an aggravating circumstance can go up to 133 million soms. Comment on an official or civil servant in connection with the performance of duty is currently considered as an aggravating circumstance and subject to criminal prosecution.
